Application information for full-time programmes for international students

Applications for admission to study and more information for international students should be requested from the university's department of student affairs (see column at right).

Professional and linguistic admission requirements

For international applicants who have not acquired their qualifications to study at a university (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) domestically, i.e. within Germany, it must be determined whether the international equivalent of these qualifications matches their German counterparts, due to the differing educational systems of individual foreign countries.
'uni-assist e.V.' is an employment and service agency for international study applicants that is entitled to administer the testing process required for this evaluation. This requires the regular application documents, an officially certified copy of the original leaving certificate, and in case this leaving certificate is not available in German or English, an officially certified translated copy in one of these accepted languages.

Please also note any additional requirements of the individual programmes (e.g. artistic aptitude tests, etc.).

International applicants must be able to prove sufficient German language proficiency. The level of German language proficiency required by the university may be indicated by:

  • the 'Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang auslaendischer Studienbewerber' (DSH) min. level 2,
  • 'Test DaF' - Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (a testing process with centralised task assignment and correction) min. level 4,
  • the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP) administered by the Goethe Institut,
  • the Grosse or Kleine Deutsche Sprachdiplom awarded by the Goethe Institut,
  • the 'Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - zweite Stufe',
  • the Zeugnis der Feststellungsprüfung (this includes the DSH).

The DSH and the equivalency test may be administered by the local Studienkolleg (study college). The study college for Dresden University of Applied Sciences is located at Zittau/Goerlitz University. The preparatory materials offered by this study college require from one to two semesters for completion.
Registration at the study college is completed via Dresden University of Applied Sciences on the basis of a complete application for a place at the university and the test administered by the certifying authority 'uni-assist'.

Before an applicant is admitted to the study college, an acceptance test must also be completed, and this takes place approximately four weeks prior to commencement of studies. The acceptance test requires German language proficiency resulting from training equivalent to approx. 600 - 800 hours; admission to the preparatory programme for the equivalency test also requires elementary knowledge of mathematics. A beginner's course in German is not offered at the study college.

Which applications are tested by the uni-assist process?

Dresden University of Applied Sciences has documents submitted by applicants checked and certified by uni-assist with regard to qualifications to attend university in Germany, i.e. in case these credentials have been acquired abroad (abitur, A-levels, high school diploma, baccalaureat, gaocao, etc.). The nationality of applicants is not relevant to this process.

For applicants, this means that any number of uni-assist universities may be applied to; the documents involved only need to be submitted to uni-assist once, since the application is tested by uni-assist (for a fee) with regard to completeness and technical/linguistic admission requirements for the programmes applied for.

The results of the testing are reported to applicants swiftly and thoroughly by uni-assist. In case of direct admission, the respective university will inform applicants whether the application has been permitted/declined.

Application to multiple universities

Please use a separate application form for each individual university! All remaining documents only need to be submitted as single copies! ATTENTION: Depending on the respective university or subject, different documents may be required!

Please note that you may only actually apply to universities participating in the uni-assist process via uni-assist. Applications for universities that do not require preliminary testing by uni-assist cannot be processed by uni-assist or transferred to the intended universities.

Application deadline

The application period at Dresden University of Applied Sciences ends as of 30th November for the summer semester and as of 15th June for the winter semester. Submission of complete documentation and payment of fees with uni-assist is sufficient. Please note that the application periods for uni-assist universities may vary, and make sure that your documents are submitted in a timely fashion to uni-assist.

More about the process

1. Please fill out the application form for your initial application and any possible additional uni-assist applications thoroughly and include all additional documents required for the desired programme.
Any incomplete applications will not be processed!
Please enter your email address. This enables us to communicate with you and clarify any remaining questions much faster and reliably.

2. Checking your documents at uni-assist is subject to our university's application process: after uni-assist has checked for complete admission qualifications according to the required documents, you will be informed whether your documents meet admission requirements. However, this notification does not indicate admission to the university! Your documents will be forwarded to the university. You will receive:

  • an invitation to the study college some time relatively close to certification by uni-assist if you are still required to complete the equivalency test or the DSH.
  • in August, you will receive final notification regarding admission/refusal concerning the desired programme after the admission process has been completed.

If you do not yet fulfill the admission requirements, uni-assist will inform you accordingly and request submission of the necessary certificates.

Please contact the uni-assist team by email regarding all questions.

Residency permit for study purposes

International applicants who do not possess citizenship for one of the European Union member states will require an entry visa for study purposes. A tourist visa does not directly permit study, and it may not be converted to a residency permit for study purposes in the Federal Republic of Germany!

For timely application for this entry visa with the responsible diplomatic representative of Germany in their home country, programme applicants will receive the necessary certificates after study requirements have been checked with the application documents.

Financing your studies

Scholarships are not awarded to beginning students. Employment is only permitted for 180 half days annually, which is not sufficient for financing the entire study programme.

Living costs can be expected to be between 800 and 1,000 euros per month. This amount includes expenses for rent in the student residence, board, study materials, social services fees, health insurance, and semester fees.
