We started from Edale rail station (SK12308535, 240m) at 10.30am, passed by Edale and took again a part of the Pennine Way, like we did at the trip to Black Hill once. We climbed up to Kinder Downfall (SK083889, 630m) and left the Pennine Way there. We went east along an 1 to 1.5m deep glacier, which was a frozen stream, passed Kinder Gates and navigated just with the compass SSE trough the Eden Moore. It was frozen and thus we haven't had problems with the mud. With the help of my new compass, we didn't got lost and reached Crowden Clough (SK095873) properly. After a short break to enjoy the wonderful view we turned east and scrambled down the steep Grindsbrook Clough back to Edale and arrived 4.00pm. After a pint Ale in The Ramble Inn pub we took the train back to Manchester. The length of the trip was 18km.
Length: 18km
Height climbed: 400m
Highest point: 450m, Dick Hill (SE01500525)
Day 1
We took the train at 9.46 in Manchester and arrived 11.39 in Windermere. I booked this ride and the one back online for 17GBP. We visited the tourist information and the woman there had been really helpful. Against the plan we had, we decided to stay in Ambleside and not in Windermere, because around Windermere were no mountains that we could climb without taking a bus and it was already late. So we took the 505(?) bus to Ambleside (3.20GBP) and started late to climb the Wansfell. The summit was just 482m high, but it was late and Ambleside is nearly sea level(10m). So our first hike was 13km long and we climbed 570m at all. At 17.30 is was time to check in our accommodation Ambleside Backpackers, where we paid 18GBP for one night, they accept cash and credit card. To complete the day we had been to a local pub, to have dinner, a pint and to plan the next day.
Day 2
The hostel was nice and we had a good night. Continental breakfast was included in the price. We took the 555 bus 8.33 to Grasmere (3.20GBP), got some stuff for lunch in a bakery (there is not much to shop in Grasmere) and started 9.15 from the foot of the mountain. We climbed the Great Rigg (766m) and the Heron Pike (612m). The view from the tops was very amazing, other climbers we meet said that this was the sunniest weekend since a long time up there. The weather was so good, that I had seen the ocean and 5 lakes from the summit of Great Rigg. The only noise came from the military jet airplanes flying deep trough the mountains and valleys. We saw and heard around 6 of them on the first day and a couple on the second day as well. Down in Rydal, we had taken the 555 bus back to Windermere at 13.55 for 4.10GBP and did there another little trip to Lake Windermere, which is the largest lake in England with the length of 10 miles and the with of just 1 mile. The length of the walk in Grasmere was 12km projected on the map, but with 800m to climb. The little trip in Windermere was 4,5km with just 130m to climb, so the second trip was much faster done. Finally we took the train 17.06 back to Manchester.
