FAQ Studying abroad and Coronavirus

At this place we would like to provide you with questions and answers concerning your stay abroad with regard to the Coronavirus. We would like to point out that the situation is developing very dynamically and that the statements correspond to the current status, but are subject to constant changes and adaptations depending on what is happening in the context of infections.

Is a semester abroad possible at all at the moment and what should be considered in connection with the coronavirus?

Generally yes! But: Health is the most important consideration!

Please inform yourself about the current situation in the host country  (Auswärtiges Amt, Travel Restrictions, RKI, Covid-19 Dashboard, Website der Gasthochschule,…). Inform yourself in detail about the situation in your destination country and whether you can and may enter from Germany.

Many universities offer courses online or in hybrid form. The website Erasmus+ Covid-19 Mobility Status der European University Foundation provides an overview in which form the courses are offered in the winter semester at the respective universities.

Provided that courses contributing to the learning objectives are offered by the host institution, virtual mobility can still be carried out in the Erasmus programme.

Already at the beginning of the virtual period, licenses for Online Linguistic Support (OLS) will be available in order to help you develop your language skills and prepare for your virtual and physical mobility.

Since no additional costs are generated in the home country during the virtual phase of mobility, no financial support is provided for this period. As soon as the physical mobility phase begins, i.e. upon arrival in the host country, you can receive the regular grant for the stay abroad.

The minimum duration of an Erasmus+ mobility of 3 months should be fulfilled. However, if restrictions due to the corona pandemic continue to exist, the physical mobility period may be shortened or cancelled and replaced by an extension of the virtual mobility period. Interruption periods between the virtual and the physical mobility phase are also allowed.

These regulations come into force on 16.6., they are not valid retroactively.

Upon entry into the host country, I have to go into quarantine in the host country. Will I receive a grant for this period?

Quarantine periods can be considered as part of the Erasmus+ funding period, which means that you will receive financial support for this period. However, a possible quarantine period will not be taken into account when returning to the home country.

I have already booked my stay in order to start my Erasmus+ semester/internship shortly, but the host country has prohibited entry or I do not want to start the semester abroad. Who pays for the costs?

Possible cancellation costs for flight/accommodation are refundable through Erasmus+.

The DAAD has published a comprehensive FAQ on the topic Coronavirus and Erasmus+.
