Anti-virus software for employees and students

The Computing Centre offers an update server for all members of the HTW Dresden as part of a state license for the SOPHOS anti-virus software.

The use of these services is free of charge for all institutions, members and students of the HTW Dresden; even the private PC of a member of the HTW Dresden can use the update service. The departure/graduation from the HTW Dresden ends the right to use and the possibility to participate in the update service.

 

In addition to the installation software, this service also provides:

  • Updates to Sophos Anti-Virus signatures
  • Updates to the Sophos Anti-Virus client versions

Currently supported operating systems (Sophos Vers. 10.3):

  • Windows 2003 / Windows 7/2008 / Windows 8 / 8.1 / 2012 / Windows 10
  • MacOS 10.6+ *)

*) If you wish to use Sophos for MacOS on computers within your faculty, please contact the administrator of your faculty. Sophos for MacOS is not directly supported by the Computing Centre. For the use of Sophos on private MacOS computers, Sophos offers free software.

Endpoint Exploit Prevention

The installation of "Endpoint Exploit Prevention", a component that protects against ransomware (crypto and blackmail Trojans) has been possible since 01.01.2018.

 

Installing the Sophos anti-virus software on Windows systems

Installation requirements

  • Users with administrative rights
  • Computer in the network area of ​​the HTW (141.56.xy); if necessary, install the VPN client for "home use"
  • Enter the proxy server www-cache.htw-dresden.de with port 3128 in Internet Explorer (check with: proxycfg -u)
  • Name server entry: 141.56.1.1 and 141.56.1.2

Installation of the SOPHOS client for Windows

  • If necessary, uninstall the Sophos software in the Control Panel.
  • If present, delete in C:\Programme\Sophos.
  • Select "Run" and enter \\rsophos.dom.htw-dresden.de\Sophos_Windows2\SAVSCFXP\setup.exe.
  • When prompted, please enter: login: user login in the Windows domain (DOM), pw: the corresponding password.
  • If desired, enable the option: "Endpoint Exploit Prevention", which offers additional protection against ransomware (crypto and blackmail Trojans)
  • To activate the Sophos update, please also enter the user login and corresponding password in the appropriate space.
  • Wait for the installation to finish and restart the computer.

Special features when working in networks outside the HTW:

  • The functionality of the anti-virus software is guaranteed, but there is no automatic update of the Sophos data ("Sophos shield" has a red cross);
  • For updating, the computer must be connected to the HTW network via VPN.

In ​​case of problems

  • Check the event display;
  • With DCOM red: Administration / Component Services / Computer / Workplace / DCOM Config.
  • SAV Service right-click Properties / Security / Start and Activation Permission / Edit
  • Allow system remote start and remote activation
  • Problems with a previous Sophos installation (rs11 is always listed as an update server in Sophos: Call up in the installation directory Sophos / Sophos Anti-Virus / the file SAVCleanupService.exe.

Subsequent installation of Endpoint Exploit Prevention

The Endpoint Exploit Prevention feature provides additional protection against ransomware (crypto and blackmail Trojans), as of 01.01.2018.

  • Select "Run" and enter \\rsophos.dom.htw-dresden.de\Sophos_Windows2\SAVSCFXP\setup.exe.
  • When prompted, please enter: login: user login in the Windows domain (DOM), pw: the corresponding password.
  • Activate the option: "Endpoint Exploit Prevention"
  • To activate the Sophos update, please also enter the user login and corresponding password in the appropriate space.
  • Wait for the installation to finish.
