User drive (Samba)

User drive (Samba)

Newly enrolled students and new university staff receive a network drive from the IT Service Centre. The central file server of the University "samba.htw-dresden.de" allows users to access their network drives from UNIX computers (eg rob) per NFS (Network File System), as well as from Windows computers per SMB / CIFS. The network drives are secured with snapshots, i.e. users can recover accidentally deleted files themselves.

Some PCs and laptops from a number of University faculties connect automatically to the network drive of the respective user. In all other cases, the users must connect to their network drives on their own. Regardless of each user's own network drive, a global network drive tmp-glb is offered for short-term storage of large files.

Good to know

The user drives are secured with daily snapshots and are kept for a month eben after deletion on the hard disk. So users can recover accidentally deleted files themselves.

The VPN can be used for access from outside the HTW. The user authentication for the network drive is done with the login and password of the Windows user management.

Users should pay attention to the following

  • Users working on a computer that belongs to the Windows domain "DOM" can map the network drive without having to re-enter the password each time. The login password is used for this. This concerns the laboratory computers for students in almost all faculties and the staff PCs of many departments.
  • Users who work on computers that do not belong to the Windows domain, enter their login "dom \\ user ID" (i.e. "dom \\ s12345") to connect (map) to a network drive. This also applies to external access via the VPN client.
  • Files created on the network drive get the access rights of the parent directory.
  • For multiple connections of Samba drives, the name "samba.htw-dresden.de" can be used twice, while further drives take the names "samba-2.htw-dresden.de", "samba-3.htw-dresden.de", etc.

[Note: Please replace the sample user s0815 with your own HTW login]

Please click with the right mouse button on the symbol of the start menu to call the context menu. Select "Explorer" over there. Alternatively, you can also press the Windows icon on the keyboard + E key at the same time to open the Explorer directly. In the Explorer, please click with the right mouse button on "Computer". In the context menu that opens, select "Connect network drive ...". Then enter the following under "Folder": \\samba.htw-dresden.de\s0815

The samba drive will be mapped without prompting the password on PCs that belong to the central Windows domain (Active Directory), if you are logged in there with the same login. Otherwise select "Connect with other credentials" and enter the other "username".

On computers that do not belong to the central Windows domain, select "Connect with other credentials" and enter "dom\s0815" as the username. The Samba drive is mapped by entering the central Windows (Active Directory) password and selecting "Finish".

Quota (maximum storage)

The maximum storage space for students and staff is limited by quotas. In Windows, you can control the amount of storage space used by right-clicking on a mapped network drive and then clicking on "Properties". The output "Used memory" and "Free memory" appears.
In justified exceptions please contact the IT Service Centre staff about dedicating additional memory space for your special needs.
