HTWD Publication Fund
When publishing under DEAL agreements with Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley, as well as in Gold Open Access journals in general, publishers often charge authors publication fees, so-called APCs (Article Processing Charges) or PAR fees (Publish-and-Read Fees). If (externally funded) projects are planned, it is often possible to apply for appropriate funding to cover these costs as part of the application process.
For authors who are unable to finance APCs or PAR fees entirely from faculty budgets, project or third-party funds, HTWD has created an Open Access Publication Fund. Authors can apply for financial support of up to € 1,850 (gross) per article from this fund.
About HTWD's Open Access Publication Fund
HTWD's Open Access Publication Fund is made up of various financial sources, including funds available for a limited period of time (third-party funds, e.g. from DFG funding programs, special funds from the Free State of Saxony) and permanently available funds of varying amounts (including the Research Innovation Fund FInF or budget funds from the university library). Support for authors is possible depending on the specific funds available in each year.
Applications must be made before submitting an article, otherwise support from the Publication Fund cannot be guaranteed. Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received until the funds are exhausted.
In addition, the applicant and publication must meet the following requirements:
- The publication has undergone peer review.
- The publication is published Open Access in a journal that:
- is part of the DEAL contracts with the publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature or Wiley or
- makes all its articles directly accessible free of charge and unhindered (Gold Open Access) and applies subject-specific, strict quality assurance procedures (usually peer review). This is usually the case if a journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) or its publisher is a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). If a journal or publisher is not listed, a case-by-case examination is carried out.
- The publication has been produced entirely or predominantly in connection with research activities at HTWD.
- The publication is published under an open content license that regulates reuse in a legally secure manner. CC-BY or CC-BY-SA are accepted as standard. Restrictive license supplements such as NC ("non-commercial") and ND ("no derivatives") will not be used. This must be taken into account when choosing the publisher.
- The publication is given a unique and permanent digital identifier, such as a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), in order to meet the requirements for citation in a scientific context, for example.
- The publication contains a "Funding Acknowledgement" in the following form:
- „Die Veröffentlichung dieses Artikels wird gefördert durch den Open Access-Publikationsfonds der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden.“ or
- „The publication of this article is funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden – University of Applied Sciences.“
- Applicants are submitting authors or corresponding authors and as such are responsible for the payment of publication fees and are members of the HTWD at the time of submission in accordance with § 50 SächsHSG.
- Applicants are strongly recommended to set up an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) and to provide it when submitting their application. ORCID helps to ensure that publications can be clearly assigned to their authors, which is particularly important in the case of frequently occurring names, name changes or names with different possible spellings. This increases the visibility of your individual research achievements and of HTWD as a whole. At orcid.org you can create your personal ORCID in just a few steps.
- Applicants declare that other Open Access publication options have been checked and excluded. The University Library is available to support applicants with advisory services.
- Applicants declare that other options for fully funding the publication (e.g. project or third-party funding, faculty budgets) have been examined and are not available.
- Non-research publications
- Publications in so-called mirror journals (also when listed in the DOAJ). Mirror journals are largely identical Open Access versions of subscription journals that were founded with the intention of circumventing the usual exclusion of funding for publication costs in hybrid journals.
- Open access articles in hybrid journals without contractual settlement of publication access costs
- Publications that could have been published in Open Access but were not published in Open Access due to opt-out regulations.
- Publications that have appeared in closed access and are subsequently "bought free"
- Fees that are incurred in addition to the open access publication fee (e.g. fee for licensing, for color illustrations and number of pages, etc.)
- Submission charges
- Conference proceedings for which other funding is guaranteed (e.g. through admission fees, membership fees, etc.)
- Separate funding for individual contributions to edited volumes
- Publication of research data
