Practice-oriented teaching - The professorship at HTW Dresden

For me, the professorship is my dream job. I can teach young people about mathematics and at the same time work in research. At HTW Dresden, that's a wonderful combination.

    What characterizes the professorship

    Berufsbild HAW-Prof engl

    Teaching is passion

The professorship at HTW Dresden is just right for people who want to accompany the educational processes of young people with their experience and knowledge. Because with usually 18 semester hours per week, teaching significantly shapes the daily work of our professors.

The professorship is not only a profession, but for most of them it becomes a vocation, because the activity is characterized by meaningfulness, variety and future orientation.

Particularly in the later specialization subjects, the study groups are quite small, so that as a professor you can significantly accompany and lead the development of our highly qualified junior staff. This entails a lot of responsibility, but at the same time opens up great opportunities.

    Need support?

Our professors receive support and advice on the professionalization of teaching from the Teaching Team. You can find more information about the specific offers and events of the Teaching Team on the website.

    Application-oriented research

Teaching and research at HTW Dresden are closely linked and strongly practice-oriented.

The direct transfer of knowledge and technology plays a major role in the research activities of HTW Dresden and usually takes place in close cooperation with partners from industry and business. Our scientists support companies in developing innovations and advancing technologies.

As a professor, you can independently set up and lead a research group, establish cooperations with industrial partners, acquire new research projects and support and supervise young scientists, for example in the form of cooperative doctorates.

    Do you have any questions?
The Prorectorate Research and Transfer provides comprehensive support and advice to researchers, for example on topics such as funding programs, intellectual property rights, research data management or cooperative doctorates. Find an overview of all services on the website of the Prorectorate.

    Future-oriented focus

Our scientists do not see themselves solely as drivers of innovation and committed to gaining knowledge. They are equally interested in solving application-oriented problems relating to the economy, ecology and society. This is another reason why we as a university community see ourselves as having a collective responsibility when it comes to contributing to the necessary change by consciously using the resources available to us and by changing our own behavioral patterns.

Therefore, our activities in teaching and research are oriented towards three interdisciplinary profile lines:

    • Securing the natural basis of life
    • Development of sustainable mobility and infrastructure
    • Design, networking and digitization of the economy and work.

In short, we specifically train specialists who will help shape our world for the benefit of future generations and find economic-technical, ecological and social solutions to the problems of today.

    Family-friendly university

Family friendliness is an important factor in university life. That is why we actively promote family-friendly study and working conditions, especially to support university members with children and/or caregiving responsibilities.

For example, in addition to counseling services and flexible work models, we provide breastfeeding and diaper-changing facilities as well as a mobile play box on campus. Employees who also take on the care of relatives in addition to their professional activities receive the necessary support from us, both in acute/short-term and longer-term care situations.

Since 2014, HTW Dresden has been certified as a family-friendly university and was awarded the "audit familiengerechte hochschule" certificate.

Further information on the topic can be found on the equal opportunities pages.

    Flexibility & plannability

Hardly any other profession offers as much freedom as a professorship. With flexible working hours, you can flexibly and freely arrange your activities within the professorship and also the organization of your free time as well as personal matters.

The scheduled courses within the semester offer you a high degree of planning and security. Our colleagues in the scheduling department take into account your wishes as to when lectures, seminars and practical courses should take place.

In addition, there is a lot of free space and time for personal projects, especially during the lecture-free period after the summer semester. Be it the optimization of your teaching, personal development or full concentration on your research projects - you decide!

    Self-determined work

Our professors especially appreciate the independent and autonomous work at HTW Dresden. For you, this means in concrete terms: You freely design the courses according to your own ideas and set priorities.

You yourself decide on your research topics and decide on the scope of your research. Specialization on certain topics in terms of your own professional interests is welcome at our university and is actively supported.

In the cover letter, you should be sure to point out that you will submit the missing documents without delay.

    Trial course

If your application documents are convincing, you will be invited to a trial teaching event and a subsequent interview with the appointment committee. Use this appointment to demonstrate your scientific or artistic qualifications as well as your university teaching skills. The trial lecture is open to the public and includes a subsequent discussion with the auditorium.

This is what makes a good lecture -
    Recommendations for the mock lecture:

    • Consider the requirements and information from the invitation letter. Keep to the time frame and pay attention to the composition of the audience. If you are missing important information for the preparation of the presentation, please be sure to seek contact with the Appeals Committee.
    • Present in a clear and understandable manner. Keep your target audience in mind; not all of them are specialists in the field of the appointment you have announced.
    • Convey an authentic insight into your didactic skills and inspire the audience for your presentation topic.
    • Use your practical experience to enhance the presentation topic.
    • Use open questions and involve the audience in your presentation - maintain eye contact.

Getting to know each other personally in the interview

The interview with the appointment committee usually takes place after the trial teaching session. We want to get to know you better and learn more about your personality, your professional career, your scientific qualifications as well as your competencies.

To prepare for the interview, we recommend that you visit the homepage of the HTW Dresden as well as the respective faculty and filter out important information. You should have developed an idea of which courses you can cover, which research projects you have in mind, and to what extent you are willing to get involved in academic self-administration.

Come across as confident, open-minded and friendly. By asking questions or expressing ideas, you underline your interest in the professorship and the work context. Your open questions will also be clarified in the interview, so think about some questions about the university, faculty and teaching area in advance.
