Change in the management committee: Prof. Frank Artinger is the new spokesperson of the UniversityAlliance for Applied Sciences

The baton in the Higher Education Alliance for Applied Sciences (HAWtech) has been successfully passed on: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Artinger, Rector of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, has been the spokesperson for HAWtech since 1 January 2022 and will take the lead in representing the interests, goals and projects of the higher education alliance over the next two years.

He takes over this position from Prof. Dr. Ralph Stengler, President of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Christoph Wolfmaier, Rector of Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, was elected as deputy speaker. The handover of office was completed by the representatives of the university managements of the six HAWtech universities at their meeting on 21 January 2022 at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

The goal of the new HAWtech spokesperson is to further strengthen the positions of the university alliance and to enrich cooperation in the areas of teaching, research and technology transfer through new networks, collaborations and projects. In addition, the promotion of the STEM field in politics, business and society plays a central role in HAWtech. The next generation of qualified engineers is of decisive importance for securing Germany as an industrial location. In particular, Prof. Dr. Artinger wants to provide more support for the next generation of female STEM students: "Young women today are better educated than ever before, and yet unfortunately far too few of them take up studies in the STEM subjects. This is where we need to start and get schoolgirls excited about studying a STEM subject. In times of a shortage of skilled workers, we cannot and do not want to do without the innovative potential of women."

Furthermore, he emphasizes: "As universities of applied sciences, the distinctive quality in practice-oriented teaching and research of the HAWtech partners is a guarantee to accompany and shape the rapid technical developments that will influence our society in the coming years. This also includes quality-assured opportunities for doctoral work or an independent right to award doctorates at universities of applied sciences. Together with regional industry, HAWtech universities already exert a very decisive influence on the regions in which they are rooted and to which they feel particularly committed. We are reliable partners for innovation and, thanks to our outstanding networks, are able to provide supraregional impetus to the economy and promote economic development in Germany." The practical interdisciplinary cooperation at the universities as well as the international networks and cooperation projects make the universities indispensable "innovation centers". Prof. Dr. Artinger points to a faster professionalization of knowledge transfer: "As HAWtech, we are very pleased about the establishment of DATI (German Agency for Transfer and Innovation) announced in the coalition agreement. This has been an approach of the HAWtech Alliance for years – DATI will make a relevant contribution to the promotion of innovation research at universities of applied sciences. Finally, the potential of universities of applied sciences in research, development and transfer will be politically recognized. In addition to clear funding commitments, efficient transfer successes for industry require broad access for universities of applied sciences in the design of DATI. Germany is thus following European neighboring countries such as Austria."

As in previous years, a HAWtech conference in 2022 will again provide impetus to participants from science, business, politics and society. "In the coming years, increasing digitization and automation will lead to even greater upheavals in industrial production and open up extensive new value creation potential. Robotics and artificial intelligence will become key technologies for mastering our increasingly complex tasks and requirements. We are currently facing a turning point that will bring about major changes. The transformation fields of climate protection and digitalization will influence all relevant areas in education and research, business and society. The conference is one of many elements with which the universities are making their contribution to taking on these new challenges and shaping our future," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Artinger.
