HTW Dresden is expanding its academic partnerships with Mongolia
New agreements with two Mongolian universities lay the foundations for binational Bachelor’s programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Mongolian students will in future be able to continue their studies at HTW Dresden.
The HTWD - University of Applied Sciences is expanding its cooperation with Mongolian universities. During the state visit of the Mongolian President, Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, to Germany from 19 to 22 October 2026, the HTWD agreed to deepen its academic cooperation with the National University of Mongolia (NUM). In addition, the HTWD and the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT) signed specific agreements on joint degree programmes.
Binational degree programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering
The cooperation with the GMIT provides for a binational Bachelor’s programme in Mechanical Engineering. The programme was developed by the faculty’s international relations officer, Professor Gunther C. Stehr, in collaboration with the GMIT. Mongolian students will initially complete two years of their studies in Mongolia and then transfer to the HTWD for a further two years. An additional preparatory year is intended, where necessary, to help students acquire the required German language skills and prepare for their studies and life in Germany.
A similar programme is planned for Electrical Engineering, for which Professor Julia Engelbrecht is responsible. After two years of study in Mongolia, students will spend a further two and a half years at the HTWD. The longer duration of the programme takes into account the separate internship semester included in the Dresden Bachelor’s programme.
Up to 30 students can take part in each of the two programmes. The agreements come into force with immediate effect. The first students from Mongolia are expected to commence their studies at the HTWD from the 2029/30 winter semester.
Upon completing their Bachelor’s degree, graduates may, subject to suitability, proceed to a Master’s programme at the HTWD.
Long-standing educational ties between Saxony and Mongolia
This collaboration builds on a long tradition of academic exchange between Saxony and Mongolia. Educational ties between the two countries have existed for around 100 years. Numerous Mongolians have studied in the former GDR or later in Germany and now hold senior positions in business and politics.
The state visit underlines the importance of these relations. The new agreements are intended to deepen academic cooperation and further develop student exchanges between the universities.
