In general, there are three categories of language courses:

  1. Compulsory modules: You have to take these; there is no freedom of choice. The maximum possible consideration here is the recognition of foreign language examinations that have already been completed elsewhere.
  2. Compulsory elective modules: Here you have the choice between several modules, be it at different levels or freedom of choice with regard to the languages chosen; this is stipulated in your study regulations.
  3. Studium Integrale: You take one of our interdisciplinary modules and receive a corresponding language certificate. Have this recognized by your examination board for your curriculum. It is therefore advisable to apply for a permit beforehand. Alternatively, there is no credit towards your curriculum; However, this will sharpen your personal profile.

For the often diverse options, we have created overviews of the individual study programs below, which are intended to support you in choosing the most suitable solution for you.

In addition to the four compulsory modules in English C1 and C2 (S761 to S764), you can choose between French and Spanish, each beginning at level A2 or B1 or B2. For this purpose, placement tests take place in the Welcome Week and your participation in this test determines your choice of language for French or Spanish.

First elective option for your 1st and 2nd semester: You must choose one of the two levels in English. Appropriate capacities are required for enrolment in the C1 course; a placement test may be required. Experience shows, for example, that the following criteria speak for the C1 course:

  • High interest in foreign languages
  • Advanced English course or above-average results in the basic course during your school days
  • Longer English-speaking stays abroad
  • Regular use of English-language literature, films, computer applications, etc.

Second option for your 3rd and 4th semester: In general, you have two options.

  1. Continuation of the English language modules from the first year of study
  2. Language level change from level B2 to C1
    • This is possible with above-average performance at English level B2 in the 1st year of study
    • If necessary, a separate English placement test takes place, which you have to pass successfully

First elective option for your 1st and 2nd semester: You must choose one of the two levels in English. A positive result in the placement test is required to take the C1 course. If you do not participate in the test, you will automatically remain in the B2 course. Please also consider the consequences with regard to your later options. Experience shows, for example, that the following criteria speak for the C1 course:

  • High interest in foreign languages
  • Advanced English course or above-average results in the basic course during your school days
  • Longer English-speaking stays abroad
  • Regular use of English-language literature, films, computer applications, etc.

Second option for your 3rd, 4th, and 5th semester: In general, you have three options.

  1. Continuation of the English language modules from the first year of study
  2. Applying for a language level change from level B2 to C1
    • This is possible with above-average performance at English level B2 in the 1st year of study
    • If necessary, a separate English placement test takes place, which you have to pass successfully
    • A later return to the English B2 courses is not planned
  3. Applying for a language change to French or Spanish as part of our offers in the Studium Integrale
    • This is possible with good performance at English level B2 or when participating in English C1 in the 1st year of study
    • If necessary, the bridging course can also be completed; However, the ECTS points are then earned at level B1
    • A successful French or Spanish placement test is required for levels B2 and C1

The language level or language change must be applied for in due time by enrolling in our OPAL course. There you will also find further information on the administrative process.

Language modules are anchored in the curriculum in numerous courses. If you already have a good command of English, you can choose English C1 or another foreign language from our Studium Integrale offer after submitting your application. For this purpose, placement tests take place in the week before the lecture period.

We have created these overviews with great care. Only the study and examination regulations that apply to you are legally binding. If in doubt, please contact us, your dean of studies or the examination board before making your decision.
