Parental allowance and parental allowance plus

Parental allowance compensates for a lack of income when parents care for their child after birth. Parents who want to share work and family responsibilities as partners are especially supported by parental allowance plus.

Scholarships

The advantage of scholarships over Bafög is that you do not have to repay the funding and, in addition to financial support, you also receive non-material support.

Most scholarships are not explicitly advertised for students with family or caring responsibilities. However, family responsibilities are often taken into account in the application and the amount of the scholarship. The Begabtenförderungswerke, for example, pay family supplements and may provide funding beyond the standard period of study.

For a semester abroad with a child, the MAWISTA scholarship programme is recommended, which also supports international students who are managing their studies abroad in Germany with a child.
